Design – Obverse

Designed by Mateusz Frąckowiak, the obverse renders this pivotal scene with unflinching intensity. Bödvar stands bound, his chains a symbol of his momentary powerlessness before an enemy he cannot yet fight. Astrid collapses in the foreground, the village burning around her. The composition does not flinch from the weight of the moment — pain, fury, and the merciless hand of fate are all present simultaneously. It is among the most narratively ambitious obverse designs Germania Mint has produced: a coin that tells a story rather than simply depicting a symbol, demanding to be read as much as admired.

Design – Reverse

The reverse shifts from the personal to the mythological. At its center stands Mount Thorbjørn — a monumental rocky massif that takes the form of a roaring bear, symbolizing the divine strength and primal power that underpins Bödvar's world. The Sowilo rune is carved into the bear's forehead — a rune of victory, light, and unstoppable force, pointing toward what Bödvar's quest will ultimately demand of him. From the stone bear's mouth flow waterfalls that feed the rivers below. The coin's outer ring forms a runic circle, and a Germanic shield bearing the double-headed eagle sits among the bear's stone teeth. Chains wrap the entire composition — the same chains that bound Bödvar on the obverse — linking his personal fate to the mythological landscape of the saga itself.
